कैलाश बुधवार सही मायने में एक वैश्विक व्यक्तित्व थे। संसार भर में जहाँ जहाँ हिन्दी मीडिया और पत्रकारिता का ज़िक्र होता है वहाँ कैलाश बुधवार के विशद विशाल व्यक्तित्व की चर्चा होना अनिवार्य है।
कैलाश जी समाज के हर तबके से समान रूप से जुड़ जाते थे। राजनेता हों या डिप्लोमैट, साँसद हों या फिर लॉर्ड, साहित्यकार हों या पत्रकार – सभी के मन में कैलाश जी के प्रति केवल और केवल आदर का भाव ही दिखाई देता था।
जैसा कि पिछले सप्ताह बताया गया था कि कैलाश जी का जन्म कानपुर में 11 अप्रैल 1932 में हुआ था। उनके पिता क्राइस्ट चर्च कॉलेज में फ़िज़िक्स के प्रोफ़ेसर थे। कैलाश जी का बचपन आर्य नगर में बीता। उनकी पढ़ाई मथुरा के किशोरी रमण कॉलेज से हुई। प्रयागराज से कैलाश जी ने इतिहास में एम.ए. की डिग्री हासिल की।
पृथ्वी थियेटर से जुड़ना कैलाश जी की व्यक्तित्व को एक अद्भुत निखार दे गया। वे पापा जी पृथ्वीराज कपूर के प्रिय कलाकारों में से थे। विनोदिनी जी से विवाह करने से ठीक पहले कैलाश जी ने पृथ्वी थियेटर को अलविदा कहा।
कैलाश जी को अभिनय से इतना लगाव था कि उन्होंने अपने पुत्र का नामकरण ही अभिनय कर दिया।
कैलाश जी ने 1969 में बीबीसी वर्ल्ड सर्विस रेडियो लंदन में शुरूआत की। 1979 से वे हिन्दी, तमिल एवं अफ़ग़ान सेक्शन के इंचार्ज बने। और 1992 में सेवा निवृत हुए। कैलाश जी के परिवार में पत्नी विनोदिनी जी के अलावा पुत्र अभिनय और तीन पुत्रियां अर्चना, ममता और धुन हैं।
अपने पिछले अंक में हमने साँसद विरेन्द्र शर्मा, कैलाश जी के बीबीसी सहयोगी, ब्रिटेन के साहित्यकार एवं पत्रकार जगत के उनके चाहने वालों की भावांजलियाँ अपने पाठकों के साथ साझा की थीं।
कैलाश जी का जाना वैश्विक हिन्दी के लिये एक ऐसी घटना है कि शोकसंदेश एवं श्रद्धांजलियाँ लगातार आ रही हैं। कुछ परिवार के पास सीधी पहुंच रही हैं तो कुछ हमें पुरवाई के ज़रिये मिल रही हैं। ऐसे संकेत मिले हैं कि कैलाश जी का अंतिम संस्कार 1 अगस्त 2020 को होना तय किया गया है। पुरवाई की उपस्थिति वहाँ अवश्य रहेगी और आपतक अंतिम संस्कार के चित्र और रिपोर्ट आपकी पुरवाई अवश्य पहुंचाएगी।

“David Page gave me the sad news about the death of Kailash. It came as a big surprise to me because he looked after himself so well that I always thought he was much younger than me.
I well remember the occasion when I interviewed Kailash and Onkar for the Hindi Service. At the time I was Acting Delhi Representative. I am very proud of having selected two people who made such outstanding contributions to the Hindi Service. I was delighted when Kailash was appointed the first Indian Programme Organiser, a post he filled with great success. After he retired, he would religiously attend any meeting I attended offering me moral support if I was on the dais.
Kailash was not only a highly talented broadcaster and an excellent manager, he was a wonderful, warm-hearted human being. You and the rest of your family will be heartbroken, I know. I can only hope that the knowledge that so many people held him in such high regard and had such affection for him will be some comfort to you.
